This course is designed to build from the foundations learned in our Introduction to Barista Skills. It is also ideal for people with some experience, looking to extend their knowledge and learn new techniques.

Over two days, you will spend time on a variety of different commercial machines, refining and extending your current skill set to produce higher quality and more consistent beverages. You will be learning more about the journey of coffee from crop to cup, varying your techniques in order to get the best quality out of alternate types of milk, and discovering techniques to enhance your speed and quality when you are working alone or with others. Also in this course is an in depth technical unit, covering thorough cleaning routines for both machines and grinders, and how to identify when it is time to service your equipment. 

The majority of the 10 hours of this course is spent making coffee, giving you an excellent opportunity to explore and refine new techniques and build confidence in your new skills. Classes are limited to 3 people, allowing the trainer to dedicate time to you as an individual, and each student to have a machine and grinder to themselves. This course can be followed up with our Finishing School.

Course Content
               
Day 1
  • Increasing existing skill level by improving technique and consistency
  • Understanding the variables that effect espresso extraction rates and the impact on taste
  • Investigating how coffee is grown, processed, sold, roasted, and cupped
  • Palate calibration exercise to learn how to taste coffee
  • Breakdown of grinder and machine components
  • Establishing good daily, weekly and monthly cleaning routines
Day 2
  • Developing skill level with alternative milks
  • Using split pouring and pour speed to improve beverage quality
  • Basics of latte art
  • Extending knowledge of a variety of beverages
  • Establishing workflow for efficiency
  • Working as a pair on the machine
Some experience is essential for this course, if you have not previously completed our Introduction to Barista Skills course. At the completion of this course, you will be provided with an Essential Barista Course certificate. You may be interested in booking for our Finishing School. This is a one-on-one hour long class with the trainer, focusing on presentation and latte art.  It is also an excellent opportunity to focus on any areas of uncertainty or skills you wish to extend further.

Due to the small class sizes and limited places, payment is required at the time of booking, and a cancellation fee may apply.
